SQE1 – Functioning Legal Knowledge Assessments
Updated over a week ago

SQE1 is made up of two exams which are designed to test your functioning legal knowledge (FLK) and the application of substantive and procedural law.

Both exams are computer-based and multiple-choice format, with 180 questions to answer in each. You’ll face several realistic scenarios where you’ll need to choose the best response out of five possible answers.

SQE1 assessment one: FLK1

The first assessment (FLK1) covers:

  • Business Law

  • Dispute resolution

  • Contract

  • Tort

  • The legal system of England and Wales

  • Constitutional and administrative law, and retained EU law

  • Legal services

SQE1 assessment two: FLK2

The second assessment (FLK2) covers:

  • Property practice

  • Wills and the administration of estates

  • Solicitors account

  • Land law

  • Trusts

  • Criminal law

  • Criminal Litigation

Ethics and professional conduct issues are examined pervasively across the two SQE1 exams.

How you’ll take SQE1

You need to take both parts of SQE1 at the same time, over the course of two days. The exams are offered in the UK and in various other locations around the world.

Each FLK lasts 5 hours and 6 minutes, so there are 10 hours and 12 minutes of examination time in total in SQE1.

If you don’t pass one of the FLKs, you can then retake that individual exam at a later sitting.

The pass mark for SQE1

The pass mark for SQE1 isn’t pre-determined and will be decided by a standard-setting panel convened by the SRA after the examination.
